Connecticut Cemetery Association

History

Our History

Formed on September 16, 1942 to lobby to the State Health Authorities about a proposed law that said "no corpse should be buried within 4 ft. of the surface of the ground." This was interpreted by the Health Commissioner to mean 4ft. from the top of the coffin or vault. That created difficulties for the cemetery superintendents and sextons. 14 cemeteries were invited together to discuss the impact of this interpretation, and made the decision to start a state association at that meeting in September Connecticut Cemetery Association continues to advocate for cemeteries in this state.  An active legislative committee monitors any legislation that may have an impact on our cemeteries. The association belongs to the New England Cemetery Association, which offers the opportunity of educational programs, networking and much more.
